Places of remembrance are not a matter of course in Germany. Places of remembrance usually have to be fought for – by initiatives, local activists and relatives’ associations. For many, perhaps also for the general public, in lengthy processes.
In Hamburg, buildings in which terrible crimes were committed during the Second World War are completely or partially empty. In some places, self-organized initiatives have fought for and established learning and memorial sites in order to give space to the great historical and contemporary significance. In some cases, the future of the buildings has been and continues to be designed with a focus on the common good, socio-cultural and district-related aspects.
The question of the necessity and design of places of remembrance must always be updated at the specific location. Some are owned by the city, others by companies or private individuals. The debate about a future form of use that goes beyond this and includes the accessibility and historical significance of the site is all too often lost in the Bermuda triangle of ownership, economic viability and realpolitik requirements.
We would like to approach this topic together.
