We want to go for a walk! As part of the ‘Day of Urban Development’, the district of Hamburg Mitte and HALLO: e.V. invite interested parties to get to know the other side of Hammerbrook. invite interested people to get to know Hammerbrook, which is mostly known as a commercial and working location, from its other side. The one-hour walk will take you past office towers, along multi-lane roads, through green oases to the listed Bille power plant. During coffee & cake afterwards, questions of (public welfare-oriented) urban development will be discussed: What role will WERK play in the future as a model project in Hamburgs? How can cooperative procedures be developed between the public, civil society and private sectors? How can monuments be rehabilitated in an innovative and collaborative way?

For many decades, there have been artistic and social uses at Kraftwerk Bille – since 2015, these have become even more public through the events of HALLO: Verein zur Förderung raumöffnender Kultur e.V.. The fact that art and culture increase the value of real estate and are used as a common urban development tool is nothing new. What is new is not to privatize these collectively produced values. For this purpose, members of HALLO: e.V., together with many other actors, have developed the concept ‘WERK – Haus Neuer Arbeit’ in cooperation with the district of Hamburg Mitte. The concept was selected as a project of the National Urbanism. The aim is to secure part of the Bille power plant permanently for the common good and to realize a heterogeneous mix of uses from production, art and social activities with favorable rents and in the common ownership of the users. Because less private property means more for everyone.
